Although it is quite obvious that Sic Bo originated in Asia, it is not easy to predict exactly when and how this game came into being. What is understood that a similar version of the game was played in ancient China, but it is believed that the initial game was played with bricks. The bricks were thrown between two plates and an upturned bowl, which later were swapped for dice in a small cage.
As the popularity of Sic Bo spread through entire Asia over time, it became known by other names, depending on the country that it was played in. In the Philippines, the game was called “Hi/Low” and in other countries it is also referred to as “Tai Sai”. The Macau peninsula, which is fast becoming the next gambling capital of the world, is especially attractive for Sic Bo fans.
Sic Bo came to the western world in the 19th century and nowadays it can be found in almost every online casino on the internet. The online casino industry is probably the main reason that Sic Bo is so popular around the world (same as online poker), and not just in Asia.
